Andy Walker talks with David Onley about protecting your kids on the Internet.

Here's some of the things he talked about:

SOFTWARE: Track down a software tool that will help you protect you children on-line. Include surf filters and time limiter software. Cybersitter, NetNanny and CyberPatrol are two popular services. See: http://www.getnetwise.org/tools/

Also there's Spectorsoft, snoop software to watch what is being done on a computer

PROTECT YOUR COMPUTER: Install a an anti-virus protection product such as Norton Anti-Virus or McAfee Virus Scan. You'll also need a firewall, which protects your computer from electronic interlopers on the Internet. See Norton Firewall (for Mac or PC ) as well as ZoneAlarm and ZoneAlarm Pro from Zone Labs

SEACH ENGINES: Altavista has an family filter to prevent kids from seeing content you don't wnat them to.

ETIQUETTE: Teach your kids to behave politely on-line as they would in the real world.

COMPUTER TIME: Limit Internet time to when you are around. See http://www.getnetwise.org/tools/ for tools that allow this.

COMPUTER LOCATION: Keep the computer in a public area in the house where you can monitor their online behavior.

REPORT INCIDENTS: Most Web sites and services that run chat groups and interative features maintain customer service and anti-policy abuse response teams. Sending an desciption of an incident to abuse@companyname.com where "Company name.com" is the name of the web service that hosts accounts can help you get a resolution. In the event of a chat or email conflict get the chat nickname or email address of the offender if possible and include it in your comunication.

CRIMES: If your child has been the victim of a crime that started on-line or occured on-line, contact your local police force. Try to keep a log of email addresses, chat names, Web sites and all other computer activity realted to the incident.
