How to Stop Spam

Spam. That's how our elders used to describe an interestingly tasting chunk of food in a tin can that allegedly included meat. My, how times have changed.

These days, spam is unwanted e-mail correspondence, usually from a source you've never heard of before. How did they get your address? Under-handed skullduggery, mostly. Why do they flood your e-mail address? Some of them are trying to drum up business for whatever wares they're peddling at the moment. Some of them are trying to spread the gospel according to themselves. Some of them are even more malicious -- they want to infect your computer, or they want to access your personal data with nefarious objectives in mind.

Two rules of thumb: Rule 1 - Don't open an e-mail message from an address you've never had dealings with before. Rule 2 - Don't even think of touching an e-mail from such an address if it includes an attachment.

This is passive defense.

In some jurisdictions, spam is illegal. Check to see whether yours is one of those jurisdictions and, if it is, report the spammer to the appropriate authorities. They will take it from there.

You can try going on offensive, too. Use a filter so a spam message doesn't even make it into your inbox.

And this is what this section is all about.
