Xircom Rex Pro 5001

By Andy Walker, Cyberwalker Media Syndicate

Sure, the Microsoft Pocket PCs fit in your pocket. And the Palm Inc. devices fit in your palm. But where's the electronic wallet we were promised?

The Xircom Rex 5001 goes one better and fits into your wallet.

It's a credit-card-sized personal organizer that keeps track of all your phone numbers, appointments, tasks and notes.
It also includes a world and local clock and an alarm function built into the date book.

This 3-3/8 by 2-1/8 by 1/4-inch gizmo provides a tiny, yet functional, LCD screen and six thumb-friendly micro-buttons to help navigate the data.

The Rex data synchronizes with a personal computer or notebook computer through included desktop software. It also can synchronize with well-known personal organizer data packages such as Symantec's ACT!, Microsoft Outlook and Lotus Notes, among others. It also supports Web schedulers such as Yahoo! Calendar and Excite Planner.
It connects to a computer through an included docking station that connects to a serial port. The Rex card also slips directly into a PC Card slot on a notebook. This last feature is snap-and-go remarkable.

This 39.7-gram (1.4-ounce) device is simple to use and easy to set up. It prompts you to answer a series of questions when you first turn it on and configures itself accordingly.
It does a have a few drawbacks. For example, it displays an error when it synchronizes with Outlook 2000, thinking it is Outlook 98, though it continues to function without a hitch.

Data input, through a scrollable on-screen keyboard, demands enormous patience or brief messages.

Oddly, it is missing a calculator function, which all the other PDAs support.
Software titles cannot be added to the Rex, as they can on a Palm or Pocket PC but if you just want Outlook like functionality in your wallet, then it's built-in features will please.
It would be nice if the PC cradle featured a USB connection. Macintosh support would also be welcome.

Finally, where's its wallet functions? Maybe future versions will be swipe-able and able to store personal data and electronic cash. For now, this gizmo is just darn cool and portable.
