Scanning isn't one of the hardest things you'll learn to do
but there is a learning curve. You need to figure out the proper
resolution, bit depths and understand the difference between
a preview and a scan.
The Visioneer Onetouch 8650 reduces the time it takes to get
off the ground with a scanning process that literally takes
just one click of a button. No matter what level of technical
prowess you or your staff posses, scanning can quickly become
an easy and standard practice for your business.
To those who have done their fair share of scanning, such ease
doesn't seem possible. How could all those steps be eliminated
or automated?
Visioneer has found a way to make makes scanning quick and easy.
Clicking one of six buttons on the scanner's front panel or
a button on its software interface throws the scanner into motion
and quickly spits a digital file out to an appropriate computer
application.
The trick is this: the buttons are each configured for a certain
scan type and automatically assigns those options behind the
scenes. Your choices are Scan, Copy/Print, Fax, OCR, Email,
and Custom.
The Scan button is for photos and is configured to scan an 8.5-by-11-inch
photo. You can scan a smaller photo with this option, it'll
just take longer because you still scan the full area and you'll
have to crop the resulting image.
The Copy/Print button scans your image so the image can be used
for photocopying or black and white printing. The Fax button
configures your scan so it'll transmit well when you fax.
The OCR (optical character recognition) button scans a letter
or document and then exports the text to a word processor. The
Email button forwards whatever you scan to your e-mail application
and attaches it to a new message. The Custom button can be set
up for whatever operation you find yourself using often. It
can be configured to scan for a high resolution, a certain size
of photo, or whatever you choose.
But each button can also be adjusted to your precise needs.
While the Scan button's default action is to scan a letter-sized
area, you can assign it to a smaller 4-by-6-inch area, if that's
what you most commonly scan.
Also, you can choose the application you want your scanned file
sent to. Visioneer's software automatically detects which of
your applications can handle each different file type and even
lists your options. For example, with the Email button, you
can choose to send your scans to Microsoft Outlook, Netscape
Messenger or any other e-mail application.
Another handy feature is the feeder for OCR documents. Reloading
after each scan can be very time consuming. With the feeder,
you can load as many as 50 documents to be scanned and then
fed to your word processor. This feature would be even better
if it handled photos, as well, but the process might bend or
damage your photos.
It should be noted that the Visioneer Onetouch 8650 can also
be used the conventional way. You can use it with your favorite
graphics application to do a manual scan. Not every scan will
fit the configuration of one of the six buttons, so manual control
is a good thing to have.
You can certainly find another scanner for a lower price that'll
scan just as well. But once you configure the buttons to scan
as you'd like, you'll find it amazingly quick and simple to
scan a whole pile of photos or letters. If your office does
a lot of scanning or frequently has big scan jobs, the cost
of the price of the Visioneer Onetouch 8650 is well worth the
convenience and the time saved.

Comments: The Visioneer Onetouch 8650 lives up to its
name. This scanner will take a lot of the work and wait out
of digitizing your photos and documents. It's easy to love this
one.
