Kiplinger's Taming the Paper Tiger 1.2

By Lowell Conn, Cyberwalker Media Syndicate

A review of Kiplinger's Taming the Paper Tiger demands two things: an evaluation of the software presented and a look at the value of the teachings contained therein.

This product combines a database program with a tutorial system that teaches users how to effectively manage the loose paper piling up on their desk. The program incorporates the lessons of managing consultant Barbara Hemphill, who demonstrates her system through full motion video tutorials.

As a program, Taming the Paper Tiger is very well organized and very easy to use. Enter the name of the current (or Hemphill's suggested) file folder titles and, as you navigate your loose documents towards physical locations, record the information within Taming the Paper Tiger's database. The software allows for entry of document name and location as well as keywords for easy recall.

The program offers small business owners two major benefits: it forces them to file their papers and to consciously keep a computer record of the papers' whereabouts.

It's true that this program aptly and simply helps users to keep track of their data. It allows for exporting filtered information (or complete file folder content information) to a text file or printer. It even provides a mechanism for printing file folder labels. It is simple, neat and efficient. It can even be used to keep track of CDs, videocassettes or any other collectible you can name.

Merits of the software notwithstanding, Taming the Paper Tiger is no more than a database combined with organizational information that you probably already know. Many efficient individuals are using these methods of paper control without having ever heard of this system. It's called organization. Even those who are not organized know how to organize or have heard about how it's done: they've just failed to practice it.

Taming the Paper Tiger is not revolutionary software. It is an easy-to-use database that has been created to track your filing systems. This program will undoubtedly help organize small business people completely overwhelmed by too much paper and not enough organization.

It guarantees that once you use it (and make a commitment to keep using it), you will be able find anything in your office in five seconds or less.
The guarantee is true. Whether you can achieve the same end without the aid of this software is a question you'll have to answer for yourself.

Reviewer's rating: 3.5 / 5
Comments: Can't fault a program for following through on its promise. Can you organize your office without Kiplinger's Taming the Paper Tiger? Only you know that answer.
