SyncIT.com's BookmarkSync v.1.1

By Peter McMahon, Cyberwalker Media Syndicate

Have you ever been in the middle of explaining a concept to a prospective client and remembered an example on a Web site that could help you win the account?

The address for the Web site, alas, was on your home computer and not at hand. Carrying your bookmarks around on a floppy disk is an option, but a better solution might be BookmarkSync.

Like other bookmark organizing utilities, BookmarkSync can make such information available remotely. This means you can access all your bookmarked Web addresses while away from your own computer. BookmarkSync is the most popular program of its kind because it is comprehensive.

Other such utilities offer an add-on or two, such as auto-update, remote updating or the ability to merge bookmark collections from different sources. BookmarkSync sports all these features -- plus it's much smaller than many less functional utilities. It’s also free. SyncIT.com's business strategy, aside from selling its technology to other Web developers, is to use tools such as BookmarkSync to develop online communities, where it hopes to generate revenue with advertising and e-commerce.

You can opt to receive -- or not receive -- e-mail marketing communications from SyncIT.com when you sign up. Its privacy statement says your e-mail address will not be given to other parties. BookmarkSync is divided into two segments: the downloadable software which runs out of your Windows system tray and the Web site that allows you to use your bookmarks from different browsers and computers anywhere in the world.

The software ensures that all bookmarks are updated and synchronized every time you add a bookmark in one directory. The site itself behaves like a program operating within your browser, always opening new links in a separate window. You can click back to the BookmarkSync site to select further links. Links are sorted and displayed in simple directory form as well as in Java tree style.

The program can display dead links (ones not accessible by its server) and gives you the option to delete them -- individually or en-masse. It can do the same for duplicates. A useful new feature allows you to add bookmarks to your home computer from a foreign one that doesn’t have the BookmarkSync client. Just go to the SyncIT.com’s Web site and drag the "Add to SyncIT" link into the browser on the foreign computer. It becomes an option on that computer’s bookmark menu and will auto-add the new bookmark to your profile online. Next time you fire up your home computer and go online, the changes will be updated on it through the BookmarkSync server.

Need to swap Web information with colleagues? BookmarkSync allows you specify whether you want to share your bookmarks with others on the Web. Your bookmarks are private unless you choose to publish them, however.

Although your bookmarks may be scrolled (not attributed to you in any way) through the BookmarkSync ticker, any bookmarks you never want to be seen by anyone else can be guarded. Just create a separate folder for them and put a period in front of the folder name. You could name it .privatebookmarks, for example. BookmarkSync's main failing is there is no way to disable the auto-save function. This would prevent files from being overwritten or deleted inadvertently. The advertising model might also be considered a drawback.

Some people might be willing to pay a reasonable fee for a version free of advertising, but such a version is not offered. Merging bookmark directories from different sources can also be problematic. BookmarkSync doesn't know where you want your financial links in relation to your movie listings, but this problem is common to all such software.

There are other ways to make your bookmarks available remotely, but BookmarkSync requires no maintenance once installed. It goes above and beyond what similar products provide and is a worthwhile and cost-effective small business tool that can increase your productivity.

Reviewer's rating: 4.25 / 5

Comments: BookmarkSync has become the most popular program of its kind and it's easy to see why. It contains features that were previously available only by combining several other bookmark utilities.
