Review
One of the great innovations of the technological
era is optical character recognition.
It truly is one of the greatest time-saving, convenience-creating
tools to join the modern computing office.
Think about it. OCR provides the power to scan a document and
convert it into an editable format, removing the need to transcribe
anything and eliminating the threat of adding typographical
errors when retyping. There is no end to the utility of OCR
software in the small business environment, not to mention many
of the professions (journalism comes to mind).
ScanSoft's TextBridge Pro 9.0 is one of the niftiest of programs
to come out of the OCR family. It is marvelously simple to use.
It works with your scanner, importing images and documents into
its engine for easy manipulation of text.
Scanned documents can be converted into any number of popular
word processor files, including Microsoft Word and WordPerfect.
More specifically, it converts the document and can be saved
in the word processing format, or it can drag the converted
document right into your processor.
Pictures and illustrations can be scanned and converted. Reprints
look good. The program very aptly transforms all words into
text files you can edit. It accurately transforms images featuring
text, culling words from within the graphical environment for
manipulation.
Do not let the sophistication of this software fool you. You
will be using it within seconds. Upon execution, TextBridge
Pro opens a screen and offers tutorial direction for all of
the tasks it can perform.
At $79.95 US ($119.95 Canadian), it is not the cheapest way
to acquire OCR software. But testing TextBridge Pro against
software bundled with one scanner was no contest. TextBridge
Pro recognized more words, retained the document's formatting
and was much simpler to operate.
It recognizes charts and tables and does it far better than
standard OCR software. The batch scheduler is a nice touch,
converting documents and files even while you are away: TextBridge
Pro can be configured to automatically convert documents that
are received by fax modem.
TextBridge Pro performs so well, with so few flaws, that the
only reason not to purchase it is that you can get it bundled
in ScanSoft's Pagis Pro 3.0 Suite for just $20 more than the
suite price.
But it's worth nothing that hardware requirements for the suite
are more strenuous than for TextBridge Pro alone and TextBridge
Pro's price is already below most competitors. So, small business
owners might want to forgo the Suite and purchase this offering
on its own.
Reviewer's rating: 4.5 / 5
Comments: ScanSoft's TextBridge Pro is strong, no-nonsense
OCR software that at price accessible to most small business
owners.
