Collaboration between a number of geographically diverse people
can be made easier with Web-based productivity tools like QuickTeam.
QuickTeam, a set of corporate intranet tools made available
through the Web, makes it possible for groups of people to share
several different types of common information in a useful and
easy-to-understand format. QuickTeam provides excellent tools
for project managers who have external contractors or team members
in other office locations who are not on the same LAN (Local
Area Network). It is also an excellent way to share project
information between a company and its customers.
On signing up, you create one or more "team rooms."
An administrator can create a team room and send out e-mail
invitations to anyone with Web access and an e-mail address.
A team room includes projects that your team will work on and
features a document archive, news, event calendars, polls and
project e-mail, among other things.
QuickTeam comes in two basic flavors: QuickTeam Express and
QuickTeam Professional. The Express version has most of the
features listed for the professional version, and it's free.
The Professional version, slated for release by mid-2000, is
available for lease on a monthly basis or through outright purchase.
The main difference is that the Professional version provides
administrative functions that allow you to track system usage
-- to see who is doing what on the service.
There is a price of admittance for the Express version. After
responding to an invitation to join a team room in the Express
version, a participant must fill out onerous demographic information
prior to being admitted to the room for the first time.
Web-based mission critical applications are a mixed blessing.
On the up side, someone else makes sure that the system is running.
On the down side, there isn't much you can do when the system
is not accessible due to congestion on the Web or some sort
of malfunction on the site.
QuickTeam is the best of breed for this particular category
of Web-based group ware. Thanks to the nature of the Web and
evolving technology, however, this may not true tomorrow, next
week or next month.
In fact, ThoughtStar has just been acquired by iManage, which
says QuickTeam Express remains free for now but the purpose
of the Express version is to provider users the opportunity
to evaluate QuickTeam tools. A decision will be made by the
end of June about whether the Express version will remain free.
Reviewer's rating: 3 / 5
Comments: QuickTeam Express provides a great way for
a team of geographically disparate people to collaborate and
the promised Professional version fills a need. Most features
are well thought out, though the document archive is not intuitive.
Would earn a rating of four out of five points if the future
of the free version were more certain.
System requirements: Web browser on any platform.

Price: Express version is free for now. Professional
version is $12.95 US ($18 Canadian) per user, per month. Alternatively,
a server installation kit can be purchased with a per-seat license
fee starting from $499 US ($700 Canadian) for five licenses.
