PowerDesk 4 Pro by Ontrack
PowerDesk 4 Pro from Ontrack is an inexpensive collection
of utilities to help make day-to-day computer use easier and
more convenient.
There is nothing revolutionary about this set of tools but you
may appreciate how some of them can save you time.
The centerpiece utility is the File Manager, which offers a
more powerful alternative to Windows Explorer. Its menus provide
a large number of command options and it allows you to divide
your screen into a third pane (instead of two) for quick folder
comparison, facilitating the copying and moving of files. It's
a boon to power users -- but if you don't ordinarily muck around
very much in Windows Explorer, you won't be overly impressed.
Similarly, PowerDesk 4 Pro offers support for opening and converting
more than 200 different types of files. If you exchange a lot
of files, this can be handy, particularly if you receive a graphic
file in a strange format or need to send a file in a specific
format. Like most of the tools included in this package, it's
handy when you need it but only a select few will need it regularly.
The File Finder offers the ability to search multiple drives.
If you frequently search for files, it could save a bundle of
time. It improves upon Microsoft's search tools but won't change
your life.
One utility that really stands out is Size Manager. Most users
run out of hard drive space at some point. Size Manager takes
the problem in hand by using the Windows Explorer interface
and bar graphs to show you exactly where all those megabytes
are going, so you can decide what can be moved, stored, compressed
or deleted. You can find the same information without Size Manager
but the visual interface makes the task easy. This is one utility
that anyone will find useful.
On the other end of the spectrum, the PowerDesk Coolbar is almost
completely useless. Essentially, it allows you to create a row
of icons to sit on your screen to launch any application on
your computer. Microsoft introduced the QuickLaunch bar with
Windows 98, which does basically the same thing.
PowerDesk 4 Pro isn't an essential purchase, but it may provide
at least one utility that can you can really use. If that's
the case, that utility is a bargain at $19.95 US ($29.99 Canadian).
