Microsoft Money 2000 Deluxe falls somewhere between accounting and personal finance software, allowing you to manage your personal and business finances in an environment that provides money management suggestions and solutions.
This program is easy personalized. Installation takes a while, but once running, MS Money 2000 queries every aspect of your finances with simple pulldown menus and voice narration describing each step of the process.
This reviewer input all personal finance information in less than 20 minutes and had a fully automated on-screen budget easily configured and ready for manipulation seconds later. Information imported from
Quicken is conveniently accepted.
MS Money 2000 doesn't just track financial information, it doles out pretty decent advice. Almost every option within the program is accompanied by a voice-over narration that identifies exactly how to handle each step of the budgeting process.
For those more experienced in budgeting, the voices can be configured off.
Also helpful is a set of multimedia offerings, which present tutorials on better budgeting tips, car and home buying advice as well as a slew of other topics. Clearly, this program has been designed for the budgeting novice.
One wonders whether the multitude of on-screen information and focus on the beginner will alienate more experienced number crunchers, however. Experienced bookkeepers are probably not the intended consumers for this product.
After the initial data entry phase, however, MS Money becomes slightly jumbled. The data entry screens are very logically laid out and the money management module comprises a lot of options and advice. But there is just too much to choose from and a little order for neophytes would do wonders.
For example, it would be helpful if Microsoft Money 2000 provided a daily checklist module to take users through the daily, weekly and monthly steps to examining and updating a budget.
In addition, the interface, though easy to use, is too resonant of Microsoft Explorer. It was objectionable when Microsoft incorporated Explorer's interface into its file management system. It feels even more obtrusive within the confines of this program. Along this tangent, Microsoft has a nasty habit of turning every option into an Internet link focused on sponsors and other Microsoft products. A little less shameless promotion would be appreciated.
Microsoft Money 2000 hits its marks in ease-of-use, relevance and utility. It is a strong program for small business people who are new to managing day-to-day budgeting. Its audio-visual enhancements serve to educate the casual user.
Expert number crunchers should look elsewhere, but there are enough money management newbies that MS Money 2000 will race off the shelves.
Reviewer's rating: 4 / 5
Comments: Jumbled, but easy to use, full of features and education. Has a basic interface, if not a basic engine.
Price: $64.95 US, $100 Canadian
