Macmillan Software Web Page Construction Kit 6.0
Most Web site design is done with the aid of software but
purists insist on doing things the old fashioned way.
They say you can design a good Web site only by learning HTML
(hypertext markup language) and would scoff at software such
as Web Page Construction Kit 6.0.
But that doesn't mean you should.
HTML may be the only way to have total control over your Web
site's design but the time needed to learn it may be prohibitive
for many entrepreneurs. It may not be as tricky as a real programming
language, but not everyone is cut out to learn it.
HTML editors such as Macromedia's Dreamweaver and Adobe's GoLive
try to offer a design environment close to the HTML roots. Web
Page Construction Kit 6.0 from Macmillan Software assumes you
have no technical knowledge, or close to none, and hides all
the technical stuff. It offers an easy-to-learn interface not
unlike that of a desktop publishing application such as Microsoft
Publisher.
Loaded with tons of templates, you could put together a small
Web site in less than an hour, with little to no effort. All
you have to do is replace your text with the example text on
screen, add photos or graphics if desired, and save. You can
even edit the buttons and assorted graphics that come with Web
Page Construction Kit 6.0. If you don't need a button for a
guest book, you can easily change it to a text link that says
whatever you like.
The method is surprisingly simple. It allows you to choose your
font and a color for your text.
The graphics included break no ground. Being the equivalent
of free clip art, they are suitable for some uses but unacceptable
for others. If you would consider budgeting money for unique
art a good investment, you probably won't be impressed by these
offerings.
The final result achieved with Web Page Construction Kit won't
make Web designers envious. But if your needs are simple, it
puts a Web site within easy reach. You can do everything you
need to do within the Web Page Construction Kit 6.0 interface.
You can even upload your Web site onto the Internet once your
design and editing is complete.
A Web site built with this program may not be the fanciest to
grace the Internet. But if you need to get online now and don't
have time to learn HTML, Web Page Construction Kit 6 can help
get you there.
Reviewer's rating: 3.5 / 5
Comments: Web Page Construction Kit 6.0 is a surprisingly
effective Web site creator for someone on a budget who has little
technical experience. Results are merely adequate but the price
is tough to beat.

Windows 95/98/NT 4.0, 8 MB of RAM, 20 MB of hard drive, a display
