A printer from a company not called Hewlett Packard is producing some of the best results of any color printer in the small business range.
What's more, it produces full color output that rivals that of many laser printers.
Lexmark, a company that has quietly become one of the leading printer manufacturers worldwide, has released its Z31 Color Jetprinter, an inkjet printer that boasts very high resolution, competitive speed and a price you won't believe.
At $149.99 US ($264 Canadian), the Z31 delivers high quality, professional-looking results. Full color prints are so dynamic, so realistic, output looks astonishingly like photographs.
There are no inconsistencies in color and none of the grainy black that accompanies the printouts of many inkjet printers. Much of this can be attributed to its 1200 by 1200 dots-per-inch resolution.
The rest of this unit's offerings are competitive, if not superior to that of others in its class. Printing speed is advertised at eight pages per minute in black and white and at 3.5 pages per minute in color.
In truth, these results are a little overstated. Both types of printing took longer than claimed, with the color pages coming closer to 2.5 pages per minute. But output resulted in very crisp black and white text and fantastic color prints.
Lexmark's patented Accu-Feed paper handling system, which claims virtually jam-proof printing, is also not quite as advertised. The paper feeds into the printer at a seemingly unorthodox angle, leaving one fearful that a jam is on the horizon. True enough, the printer does not jam up on the feeder side. But when printing many pages in a row the feeder more than once caught hold of the previously printed page, jamming up the operation.
On the topic of paper, the tray can accommodate only 100 sheets with no ability to expand capacity, not exactly ideal for heavy-duty traffic.
The Z31's construction, however, is strong. This is no lightweight unit. Cartridges install easily. So does the accompanying software, which monitors print jobs and ink use in a very straightforward manner.
Here's a simple checklist to determine whether the Lexmark Z31 is for you.
Do you print full color documents? Are you looking for an affordable unit? Are you willing to sacrifice printing time (trust us, there are slower printers on the market) in return for the highest of print quality? If you answered yes to all three, you just found your printer.

Comments: The Lexmark Z31 InkJet Printer produces fantastic text and color print quality at a great price. If speed is your thing, you'll need to spend more and look elsewhere. Also, a paper tray capacity of 100 sheets is low.
