Review
Hewlett Packard Jornada 690
By Lowell Conn, Cyberwalker Media
Syndicate
Hewlett Packard's Jornada 690
handheld Windows CE-based computer is a
marvelous piece of technology. Not only
will the Jornada line set a new standard
for the handheld computing market --
currently dominated by the Palm Pilot
series -- but do not be surprised to see
innovations considered standard on this
hardware soon being incorporated into
big brother desktop computers.
Out of the package, the Jornada 690 is
clear and intuitive in operation. It is
slightly larger than the classic,
non-Windows-based electronic organizers
but has a keyboard. It resembles a
laptop computer, compressed into as
small a package as possible. It also
operates more like a laptop than an
electronic organizer.
Frankly, the keyboard takes some serious
adaptation. Very big fingers will not be
able to use it, but average to big-sized
hands will be able to adjust. This
reviewer, who gets frustrated stabbing
away at most laptops, found the
changeover easy and quick. The quick
adjustment may be due to keys that are
very responsive and not overly
sensitive.
The interface in this unit shines.
Repeat: this is not a pocket organizer,
this is a mini-computer, it operates the
Windows CE platform. There is no
learning curve if you are conditioned on
desktop and laptop computers.
Much like the Palm and other hand-held
units, Jornada also utilizes a stylus
pen to replace the mouse.
Point-and-click execution has been
replaced by point and tap. Windows
navigation has never been easier.
One can only hope that desktop and
laptop units might standardize the
stylus and send the mouse to an early
demise.
The Jornada 690 is stacked. A 56k modem
allows users to surf the Web. It also
comes standard with 32 megabytes of
memory and can be upgraded by purchasing
additional cards.
The unit doubles as a memo recorder,
with hot buttons on the side allowing
you to record without first loading up
the appropriate program. Networking with
a laptop or desktop computer is easy to
do and is very versatile, albeit
somewhat sluggish in speed. A 3.5-inch
floppy disk drive within the unit would
be a great addition -- though where it
would fit is uncertain. Every side of
Jornada already has serious utility.
This handheld computer is not cheap. At $999, only those
serious about utilizing all benefits of the Jornada need
apply. If you are cost-conscious but eager, the 680 model
offers the same benefits for $100 less, but with only 16-megs
of standard RAM.
This unit is ideal for small business
people always moving -- particularly
those who travel. If you have advanced
past paper and pen contact and schedule
management -- and are looking to join
the handheld computing craze -- the
Jornada 690 looks like a winner.

Comments: The Jornada 690 does
everything. It is pricey, but addictive
and useful.
