Hewlett Packard LaserJet 3150 Series
If you're limited for space in your office and have a budget
that can afford quality output, but demands a lot of features
for your dollar, a multi-function class of printer may be right
up your alley.
In the 3150 series multifunction printers, Hewlett Packard has
attempted to pack four machines -- a fax, printer, copier and
scanner -- into one device with a petite 1.4-square-foot footprint.
What's ingenious about this device is that it doesn't need a
computer to work as a fax or copier. You just use the buttons
as you would on a fax machine or a copier.
Add a computer and the device works as a six-page-per-minute
black and white laser printer. It can also scan documents in
black and white (or grey scale) with a resolution of 600 dots
per inch.
The 2 MB of memory on board allows the 3150 to perform more
than one task at a time. For example, a fax can be sent at the
same time pages are being printed from a computer. The unit's
memory can also store arrived faxes for later retrieval.
All this stand-alone functionality works just fine. Add the
computer component and there's a little bit of trouble, however.
The device is advertised as networkable with a separate printer
server (it was tested with the HP JetDirect 170). On one computer
on a small network, it installed fine -- but a second computer
would work with the printer for a day or so and then lose it
on the network. Multiple reinstalls later, the installation
seemed to stick, but only after using the JetDirect configuration
software.
In the same realm, the printer software showed two paper trays,
both with the same description. You could assume one was the
manual feed and the other was the default paper tray, though
both feed from the default paper tray. A wire output tray also
tended to come lose at the slightest provocation.
Notwithstanding the software problems, the hardware components
on the 3150 seem to be well designed, though there are better
deployed devices among HP's competition. HP still has some work
to do on the 3150's software.
Reviewer's rating: 3 / 5
Comments: Fix the software issues and Hewlett Packard's
LaserJet 3150 would be ideal for a small office with fewer than
five people. It provides a fax, printer, copier and scanner
in one device that takes up very little room.
