Stage two of the Internet revolution has begun as new hardware
appliances geared for on-line business use are released. HP's
Digital Sender 8100C is one such machine -- an e-mail appliance
that scans your documents and transmits them as an attachment
to a remote e-mail address.
An interesting and cool gizmo that marries faxing and e-mailing,
the Digital Sender could one day be stationed in every business
across the corporate landscape.
Today, for small business in particular, common usage of this
dedicated piece of equipment is still down the road. Price shouldn't
take precedence over quality but $1,299 US ($1,950 Canadian)
is hard to swallow, especially for small business people who
have to budget for $500 printers.
Considering the price of a quality scanner runs in the $300
range and Internet access runs anywhere from no cost to hundreds
at most a month, the Digital Sender is not a cash-efficient
option unless your business does an overwhelming amount of long-distance
faxing.
But if your long-distance fax volume costs enough to consider
the switch to e-mailing all pertinent documents -- this may
be your alternative. The Digital Sender is easy to use and quite
intuitive for those familiar with fax machines. Plug it in,
enter some pertinent data and you're off.
The two most difficult functions will be figuring out your IP
(Internet protocol) settings and figuring out where the @ button
is on the keyboard.
Both are easily explained in good documentation and HP customer
service representatives are always good for a call.
Enter a document into the feeder, enter the e-mail address or
choose one or more from a customizable list of e-mail addresses
and you are off.
The document is scanned into a .PDF or TIFF file and attached
to an e-mail to go. The Digital Sender is not perfect.
You cannot e-mail messages but must scan them in. Also, though
the unit looks and operates like a fax machine, it does not
fax documents. For the price, we expect more utility.
The Digital Sender 8100C is a good appliance that will only
get better and cheaper. Wait until this happens before investing
in one.

Comments: The $1,299 US you'd spend on the HP Digital
Sender 8100C would not be wasted, but for this price it should
send regular faxes as well as scanning documents and attaching
them to e-mail. Wait for price and functionality to improve.
