Most of Hewlett Packard's low-end, economical hardware units are affordable, easy to use and of good quality.
The ScanJet 3300C is not an exception but it does not impress. The results are good and the output holds its own, but it does not offer the same quality sharpness of moderately more expensive HP models and models from other brands.
A nice touch is that the scanner, in conjunction with your printer, creates a photocopier of sorts. There are two buttons on the scan unit, one for scanning, the other for photocopying. Tap the photocopy button and the HP software emerges onscreen, emulating a photocopier control panel.
The unit is east to install and easy to use. Plug it in and you're ready to go. It is a lightweight unit but it is durably constructed.
The unit comes bundled with a good amount of software and the scan software, in particular, is quite nice. HP's PrecisionScan offers great options and provides users with an opportunity to do small doses of tinkering before saving the scan into a file or importing it into an editor for further manipulation. When software is a primary benefit of a hardware unit, however, you know the rest of the story is not so bright.
Full color images scan at an adequate, but unimpressive speed. Waiting one minute per page was not uncommon. Also, the unit only accommodates letter-sized pages and, unlike other scanners with similar limitations, the ScanJet 3300C does not offer an accessory paper feed to accommodate legal-sized documents.
The killer disappointment is the scanning resolution of 600 by 1200 dots per inch. This level of resolution is not high enough for top quality outputs. Your marketing material will not have sharp photographs when using the 3300C. For any official purpose, this unit is unsuitable.
It is hard to recommend the ScanJet 3300C when similarly priced scanners offer much higher resolution, a speedier operation and better accessories. HP itself offers better stacked units at prices just a shade above the cost of the 3300C. If you are serious about scanning and want high quality work for your small business needs, take a pass on the ScanJet 3300C.
