You would be hard pressed to find a more aptly named scanner than Epson's Perfection 1200U. This flatbed color unit offers high optical resolution (1200 by 2400), can be set up and used within 15 minutes and outputs very high-quality, crisp color scans at an incredibly fast rate -- all for an affordable $250 US ($375 Canadian).
Can we heap on any more praise? We'd sure like to. Included is a fantastic array of software that will fill out your imaging needs, should you not already have the appropriate programs. The software installs quickly, the unit plugs in, and you're off.
Press the green button (could be a bigger button with a bigger light, perhaps) and the computer asks you which program you will use to manipulate your scanned document.
Unlike other scanners that save the image to disk first, this one launches your desired program for instant manipulation. Some might see this as an unnecessary extra step, but in plenty of high volume shops, images are scanned for instant use.
In other words, this is no major setback. The outputs are high quality and sharp. Full-color elaborate images were scanned and reprinted with very high detail and very good results. The speed of scanning has to be seen to believed. A full-color photograph was scanned in 15 seconds (at most).
There are a few catches. Epson has created a unit that is compatible with a wide array of add-ons, some you may even consider needed. In other words, the price could very well quickly double.
First of all, the Perfection is a letter-sized scanner. Legal documents will not scan fully without a 20-page document feeder that is sold separately for $200 US. For users who scan transparencies and negatives, an optional adapter will cost an additional $99 US ($150 Canadian). In other words, if your operation has comprehensive scanning needs, the low cost of this great unit could be misleading.
But for the rest of us, the Perfection is a find: a very quick, high quality scanner at a competitive cost. It's lightweight but not brittle, with a cover that easily detaches but does not feel fragile or ready to break. Did we mention lightning-quick scans? The Epson Perfection 1200U is the closest thing to perfection on the market.

Comments: The Epson Perfection 1200U scanner is fast and effective. Rating is downgraded if your scanning needs require purchasing accessories.
