Corel Print House 2000 for Macintosh
Corel is finally attending to the home market, sorely neglected
by most Mac-based graphics packages.
Unlike most professional software, Corel's Print House 2000
is easy to learn, inexpensive and contains everything required
to bring a graphics project to completion.
Along with Print House itself, used for layout and printing,
the package includes Photo House, for retouching and manipulating
images.
Even the box stands out from those of other graphic packages:
instead of the usual cardboard box, Corel ships Print House
in an attractive, plastic document holder.
A variant of Print Office, Corel's professional layout application,
Print House shares many characteristics with it, including a
library of templates. In fact, aside from the packaging, most
of the differences lie with the kind of clip art and the type
of templates included.
The same simple-to-use interface, known as the Notebook, explains
each step as the work progresses. A project window, containing
the document being worked on, is provided on the right side
of the screen and a Notebook page containing step-by-step layout
instructions is offered on the left. If you can navigate a Web
browser, you can use this interface. The two are quite similar.
The step-by-step approach is a great help while learning. This
interface can become frustrating once you're already comfortable
with the software, however: you cannot speed things up by using
keyboard shortcuts.
This approach also makes the online help almost redundant, although
there is more in-depth information offered in the help.
True to the Corel tradition of bundling clip art along with
software, Print House includes three CDs containing clip art
and two CDs containing photos. All may be browsed or searched
directly from the Notebook or you may prefer to flip through
the sample book provided.
Aimed at the home market, Print House does not have as many
business-oriented templates as its sister product, Print Office.
The majority are for greeting cards, calendars, banners, preserve
labels, etc. Simple business cards and templates for letterheads
and the like are included but most templates aren't aimed at
a work setting and will find more use in a home environment.
To ease swapping of pictures and words, Print House supports
most the common formats, such as JPEGs, PICTs and TIFFs for
images and MacWrite and WordPerfect for text. Digital cameras
and scanners may be used along with the software, should the
provided clip art not prove to be up to the task at hand.
Print House is a complete package that doesn't require a lot
of training and may be just the thing for the amateur designer
or a small business with an occasional design project. If you
want templates for producing a high volume of business documents,
however, you might be better off with a graphics package more
oriented toward professional applications.
Reviewer's rating: 3.75 / 5
Comments: Corel's Print House is a good package for the
amateur designer. While home office workers and small businesses
may benefit from it, other alternatives such as Print Office
could be a better choice.
System requirements: A Power Macintosh with a minimum
of 32 MB RAM with Virtual Memory enabled, Mac OS 8.1 or later
and a CD-ROM drive. Corel recommends 64 MB of RAM, Internet
access, a color printer, scanner and digital camera for enhanced
performance.
