Palm IIIc Handheld Organizer

Long battery life, small pocketsize, colour screen. Pick two for your pen-based handheld computer. For the longest time, 3Com Corp. makers of the Palm line of handheld computers has picked the first two while it's competitors has picked color to the detriment of the other two.

The Hewlett Packard Jornada handheld computers does handheld colour best with the capability of 16-million colours. But the device is bulky and chews battery power like a dog at a roast beef buffet.

Now 3Com has figured out a way to give their on-the-go devices all three features. The new 3Com Palm IIIc ($679) offers a 256-colour screen without trading off size (they actually shrunk the device), but in the process took away half the built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery life. The colour Palm's battery, which recharges in its computer-linking cradle, lasts about two weeks with daily regular use.

It's monochrome rechargeable counterparts would last up to four weeks on the same power. Mind you, adding colour to a monochrome device that is already beating its colour competitors is more of a bonus than a necessity. The new screen is bright, the colours are stark and it's a welcome addition to the Palm features.

The screen is not high resolution. You can count pixels with your naked eye, but -- real estate agents, insurance adjusters and grandparents take note -- the quality is good enough to tote around digital pictures of properties for sale, smashed-up cars and the grandkids.
