Price: The cost of digital cameras

One of the key challenges in finding the right digital camera for you is fitting the camera into your budget. Currently (Aug. 2005), the price of resolution in a camera ranges from $35 to $50 per megapixel. A 3X optical zoom adds $60 to $100, and a 4X adds about $150 or $200. Go to a 10X optical zoom and add approximately $200 to the price of the camera. Finally, the option of a swivel screen can add a further $50 dollars to the cost.

Generally price is a good indicator of quality for major digital camera manufacturers. Consider the features that are most important for you and then search around for the camera that meets your requirements. Competition is such that as long as the features are matched to your needs, price will often reflect a better camera for you.

When comparing two cameras that are similar in features, but are priced very differently, often the disparity is due to the quality of lens or the size of the data card. Sometimes it's just brand.
