Andy Walker - Biography

Andy Walker is one of North America's top technology journalists.

He started working in technology at the birth of the consumer Internet, when he produced the first Canadian-sponsored content on Prodigy in 1994. In 1995, he was a key force in putting Southam Inc, Canada's largest newspaper chain on the Web. While at Southam New Media he engineered what have become some of the busiest journalism web sites in Canada. He was also a key architect of Canada.com training the launch team in web technologies and designing and deploying the sites first interactive features.

Andy went on to train at MSNBC and then was part of the pioneering team that launched Microsoft's entry into Canadian news on MSN.ca between 1997 and 1999.

During this remarkable period of Internet history, Andy leveraged his career as a journalist by writing about technology for the Edmonton Journal newspaper. Subsequently, his column "Cyberwalker", a tech advice column became syndicated across the Southam newspaper chain via the Southam Wire.

He went on to write for some of Canada's most prestigious news outlets including the National Post, the Ottawa Citizen and Fast Forward, the Toronto Star's award-winning technology section. On-line, he has been read by millions on Cyberwalker.com, Quicken.ca, MoneySense.ca, Onvia.com, ideacafe.com, Dig-it.com and Sympatico.ca. His work has been syndicated across the North America and around the world and has been translated into French, Spanish and Italian.

Andy has contributed to the highly acclaimed enRoute magazine and to MoneySense, Canada's foremost personal finance magazine. He has also appeared as a tech expert on hundreds of TV and radio broadcasts including HomePage on CP24 in Toronto, CityPulse and Breakfast TV on Citytv (also in Toronto), Canadian Living TV, Global TV's National News and CBC Radio. He reported live by phone to Toronto-based Citytv's coverage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks from New York City after witnessing the disaster first hand from an Air Canada flight on approach to LaGuardia Airport.

Between 2002 and 2004, Andy was the executive editor of Berkeley, CA based Dig_iT magazine, a publication focused on the digital lifestyle, founded by tech publishing pioneers David Bunnell and Fred Davis.

From 2004 to 2005, Andy co-hosted and co-produced thre internationally syndicated show Call For Help with Leo Laporte and Amber MacArthur.

He is the author of Absolute Beginner's Guide to Security, Spam, Spyware and Viruses (Que Publishing) and has signed to write his second book, Windows Vista Help Desk, which is slated for release in late 2006. Andy currently hosts and produces the video podcast Lab Rats with gadget guy Sean Carruthers and appears on AM 640 Toronto Monday nights with radio personality Mike Stafford.

Andy, 38, was born in the UK, educated and raised in Canada and now lives in Toronto with two cats and a house full of tech gear.
