You can tell which version of Windows you have by right clicking on the My Computer desktop icon and selecting Properties. Under the System heading it will read, "Microsoft Windows 95", "Microsoft Windows 98", or "Microsoft Windows 98, Second Edition" plus a version number and build number. Here’s a clip and save list:

  • 4.00.950: the original Windows 95 (if the build number is 4.01.970, then it’s Windows 95 plus the Active Accessibility client)
  • 4.00.950A (build 4.00.950): the original Windows 95 with service pack 1 installed
  • 4.00.950B Windows 95 OSR2 version (build 4.00.1111): Windows 95 installed by a PC vendor
  • 4.00.950B Windows 95 OSR2.1 (version 4.03.1212-1214): Windows 95 installed by a PC vendor with a USB patch available. It will appear as USB Supplement for OSR2 in the Add/Remove Programs icon. This not installed by default.
  • 4.00.950C (version 4.03.1214): Windows 95 OSR 2.5 Windows 95 installed by a PC vendor with a USB patch also installed.
  • 4.10.1998: The original Windows 98
  • 4.10.2222 A: Windows 98 Second Edition
